This year the event was held on the Sunday as the Saturday weather forecast was for heavy rain.

Members of the Rotary Club are always willing to help, but more so in this particular case as Freshwater Court is owned by one of their own Members.

ROTARY CLUB OF WEST WIGHT

The Rotary Club of West Wight participated in the St. Georges Day celebrations at Northwood Park, Cowes on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th April.

Our objective was to show the general public how Rotary makes a difference at times of international disaster.

The primary task of disaster relief is to save lives.

There have been 7 major disasters worldwide since Christmas, with Haiti getting the most publicity. Rotary projects have sent some 18,000 relief boxes to Haiti with 5,000 more planned.

At Cowes we demonstrated 3 types of disaster boxes, which give relief to those in need, in a timely manner. They were Rotary ShelterBoxes, AquaBoxes and LifeBoxes.

ShelterBox is the biggest Rotary disaster relief charity. It is now a Rotary Global project. In 10 years it has provided 52,000 boxes worldwide saving over half a million lives.

Each ShelterBox (coloured green) provides a dry shelter, a warm bed, light & heat, clean water, cooking aids and tools for a family of 10. The key item in each ShelterBox is the 10-man tent, which we erected in 20 minutes and demonstrated during the 2-day event.

Although only designed for 6-month use many of these tents provide family shelter for much longer.

Each AquaBox (coloured blue) provides clean water for a number of families. They are dispatched mainly to disasters, such as flooding, where clean water, not shelter, is the highest priority. For community use an Aquafilter unit can be provided.

The LifeBox (coloured yellow) contains items for ongoing rather than immediate basic relief. One key item, the personal LifeStraw, which is worn around the neck, ensures that all water sucked up through the device is free of contamination and disease. It lasts for 1 year.

We would like to thank all those who contributed £75 towards our Rotary disaster relief projects.

Rotarian William McClintock

The Rotary Club of West Wight began the Easter Card competition several years ago and it is now well established in this area.

This year 600 cards were sent out to all the schools in the West Wight. The competition was judged by 3 independent local judges and the winners, and the best cards were displayed on boards at local venues.

Each school had a winner and 2 runners up and money prizes and certificates were presented to the winning students at each of the participating schools. A shield was presented to the school with the best overall display and this year was won by St. Saviours School, Totland. Well done !!!!!!

Our next competition within the schools is a poetry competition and we will be telling you about this later.
